SG Freight

The Supply Chain Africa division delivers an end-to-end supply chain solution through the integration of its multiple business units. Its services include supply chain optimisation, consulting, technology, procurement, third-party distribution, transport, multi-temperature controlled product distribution, bulk raw material transportation, warehousing, inbound and outbound freight forwarding, customs clearing, import and export consolidation, international airfreight services and bonded cross-border transport.

The Freight business is well positioned to supply a modern fleet, enabled by technology and expertise to move cargo safely, timeously and cost effectively across South Africa and into neighbouring countries. Our national network of sites allows us to store and efficiently distribute goods to numerous locations. The fleet consists primarily of tautliners, and our vehicle age is kept low through a regular fleet replacement programme.

SG Freight is committed to ensuring that effective HSE practices are deployed throughout its business, and currently holds the following accreditations:

  • SQAS (Sasol Safety and Quality Approval) since 2012
  • RTMS since 2006

SG Freight combines operational delivery excellence with the use of leading-edge technology and ongoing innovation to create dynamic supply chain solutions for its customers. Our complete solution, Freight Online, has been developed over a number of years by SGIT, customised to include all facets of order, transportation and delivery visibility. Freight Online is a best of breed combination of in-house technology and software using a web-based platform to provide transport order fulfilment visibility at the best cost to deliver, using internal and outsourced vehicles in both 3PL and 4PL environments.

The Freight business is made up of four core pillars consisting of:

Long Distance

Provides a national primary haulage service across the country with deliveries also being made into Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique. In excess of 80% of all tonnage moved is through long-term contracts across a blue-chip customer base. A portion of the fleet are accredited to transport hazardous goods, with drivers trained to the highest levels of safety in line with our accreditations. Market sectors include paper and pulp, packaging, white goods, building materials, paints, packaged lubricants, plastics and FMCG goods.

Dedicated Contracts

Involves providing dedicated equipment to cover a range of activities across industries as diverse as raw timber, automotive parts, paper, pulp and alcoholic beverages. It is within our dedicated contracts pillar that specialised equipment is introduced to enhance profitability and deliver a superior competitive advantage to our clients.

4PL

Entails sourcing and securing resources, capabilities and technologies to provide integrated supply chain solutions. From inbound logistics to outbound distribution, we seek to drive efficiencies that enhance profitability and competitive advantage. This 4PL pillar is supported by our Long-Distance fleet, ensuring a seamless offering, backed by a sizeable fleet to handle peaks throughout the year.

SG Bulk is a specialised bulk fuel and dry powder distribution business providing short and long-haul transportation services to clients in the energy, aviation, civil engineering, construction and cement industries. The business currently operates a fleet in excess of 70 bulk tankers and is well positioned to assist clients who require specialised bulk fuel and powder distribution solutions.

Distribution Capabilities

SG Convenience has one of the largest national delivery footprints in South Africa, serviced by 7 Distribution Centres located in Cape Town, George, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg and Nelspruit. We procure, warehouse and distribute a wide variety of brands ranging from frozen, chilled and ambient suppliers. All warehouses cater for units, cases, layers and full pallet receipts, storage and picking of products. Diversity in range of product covers forecourts, PFM, HORECA, general liquor, together with restaurants and fast food outlets. Our national distribution fleet consists of over 100 multi temp vehicles which have flexible freezer compartments, which cater for customer flexibility. Our in-house Super Group IT Department have developed bespoke sales ordering platforms, warehouse management tools, order tracing, vehicle tracking and E-POD Business Intelligence systems. Our warehouses operate the latest materials handling equipment ensuring high productivity and up time. We have in excess of 1400 Frozen Pallet Locations, 20 000 racked pallet positions and hold inventory exceeding R240 million at any given time.

Sales Capabilities

Our dedicated national team of SG Convenience Sales Representatives sell and manage an extensive basket of goods and products, sourced from leading FMCG Suppliers across multiple categories to add value in the Petroleum Forecourt, Convenience, HORECA channels (Hotels, Restaurants, and Catering) and General dealers through a streamlined ordering and invoicing process which is delivered within a 48hour delivery window. Our Sales Representatives provide a frequent face to face contact and ensure that our Customers are supplied with the right range of products to develop and grow their business and that our Suppliers receive optimum Brand support. Our Sales force is backed up by our highly skilled Tele-Sales function which assists with out of cycle calls and Customer queries.

Our Sales Force capability is further enhanced by our top of the range, In-house developed Artificial Intelligence sales solution, Cella Rep. Our Cella Rep sales tool provides accurate geo- location of all our Customers, has the capability to provide historical sales data and predictive sales forecasting by store as well as provide product information and insights that effectively and efficiently add value to the selling process.

Procurement

The Procurement Division within SG Convenience supports the distribution centres situated in 7 regions of South Africa. The National Procurement Division is situated in Isando, Johannesburg.

All vendor negotiations, sourcing, planning and buying is managed from Johannesburg. The Procurement Division sources, procures and managers the demands of liquor, ambient, frozen and chilled products.

Procurement engages with the all key vendors in ensuring sufficient product is secured for distribution within the forecourts, liquor and Alternate Channels. Procurement plans and manages the promotions offered in conjunction with forecourts and vendors. Procurement has implemented Netstock, an inventory tool to plan and purchase more accurately and efficiently. With Netstock procurement is able to place orders quicker, minimise out of stocks and reduce excessive stock.

National Claim & Pricing

The National Claims and Pricing Department is responsible for processing all price increases or price changes on all products on a national level, ensuring compliance and standardisation of product pricing across all regions.

Another part of our extensive service offering to both suppliers and customers is being able to facilitate promotions and discounted pricing as negotiated between suppliers and customers. Suppliers confirm any negotiated promotions or pricing to the claims department, who then in turn loads, facilitates and manages this on their behalf. The customer receives their negotiated pricing on invoice and the supplier receives singular monthly claims with all promotional sales data and supporting documentation. This can be managed nationally, regionally or singularly for customer groups or individual customers alike.

Technology & Market Data

SG Convenience uses state of the art technology ranging from WMS systems and hand scanners, to automated routing and ePoD for our drivers. We provide our suppliers updated live sales data for insights on sales trends. Our sales force uses the latest technology in Cella Rep that geo locates them when arriving at a store giving them all relevant information for that store from promos, credit limits, past orders and a gap analysis on new items for the store. SG Convenience prides itself in having the latest technology putting us at the forefront of Convenience warehousing, delivery and sales.

RWS IS A TOTALLY NEUTRAL REGIONAL COURIER WHOLESALER (as a company policy, we do not service any retail or commercial customers directly).

Our raison d’etre is to partner with Courier & Logistics industry players to render a cost effective, reliable and sustainable regional collection & delivery service.

RWS owns the most extensive regional wholesale network in the country through our 22 inland branches.

Regional Wholesale Services has revolutionized the regional wholesale market through an advanced in-house designed and developed web based freight management and tracking system which has been refined over the past 3 years.

This system automates much of the operational process to ensure control and uniformity of operations nationally. Our Management Dashboard provides an overview of critical processes and allows rapid response should there be any areas of concern.

The RWS freight system is able to integrate with all other major freight systems providing a closed loop system from importing customer manifests to the seamless transfer of text POD’s and images back into our customers systems.

Our drivers’ smart phones are equipped with an app that allows them to report success or failure at Point of Contact, date/time stamped with Receiver Name or Failure Reason. This information is logged on the RWS system and immediately updated to the customers system.

All our customers are able to access their own tailor-made RWS Freight Portal where all shipments will be visible via an overview screen with bore-down facilities showing the Waybill status, text and imaged POD’s.

  • LHL - Daily road transport connecting our JHB main hub with our 22 branches for regional delivery
  • HFC - PUDO (Pick-up and Drop-Off service). LHL service into or out of either of our branches from and to Johannesburg.
  • SDX - Sameday Express-Delivered same day as handed over.
